Dr. Dirksmeier is a native New Englander who attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA on an ROTC Scholarship. Upon graduation in 1984, he was commissioned a Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He served as a Marine Aviator and Intelligence Officer before entering medical school in 1991. He received his MD degree in 1995 from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and completed a general surgical internship and an orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Pittsburgh during which time he developed a particular interest in spinal surgery. He remained at the University of Pittsburgh and completed an Orthopedic Spinal Surgery Fellowship under several nationally known experts in the field.
Dr. Dirksmeier is extensively trained in the operative and non-operative management of all developmental, degenerative, pathologic, and traumatic conditions of the spine. He has been involved in spinal surgery outcomes research and has published technique articles in subspecialty journals describing minimally invasive surgical techniques. He is an active member of the Seacoast Spine Study Group, the New England Spine Study Group, the North American Spine Society, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His elective practice is entirely devoted to evaluating and treating spine problems.
