Dr. Brennan Gives Presentation at NFL Headquarters

February 19, 2015

Dr. Brennan with Dr. Doug Casa, Korey Stringer Institute COO at the NFL Headquarters

Dr. Fred H. Brennan, Jr., a sports medicine specialist at Seacoast Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, recently traveled to New York City to speak at the First Annual Youth Sport Safety Governing Bodies (YSSGB) meeting held at the NFL headquarters.

This two day meeting was organized by the Korey Stringer Institute (KSI) and brought together leaders from several key youth sports organizations in late January. Key leaders from USA Hockey, USA Wrestling, USA Tennis, USA Football, USA Lacrosse, USA Soccer, and the US Olympic Committee attended this meeting to learn how to improve the safety of athletes in their respective sports through education and training of athletes, coaches, and parents. Experts and leaders in sports concussion management, heat stroke prevention and treatment, and prevention of sudden cardiac death in young athletes presented the latest research and guidelines to this elite group of leaders from USA sports.

Dr. Brennan presented current recommendations for the prevention and response to sudden cardiac arrest and death in young athletes. He emphasized the importance of a quality pre-participation physical exam and training in Basic Life Support (CPR)/proper use of an Automatic External Defibrillators (AED’s) for coaches, parents, and student-athletes. In his presentation, Dr. Brennan stated that no student should graduate high school without being trained in high quality compression only CPR and rapid AED use, stressing the reality that these two items save lives every year.

According to Dr. Brennan, “The Korey Stinger Institute is an outstanding resource for education and research in the prevention of sudden death in sports. I share the same philosophies and mission and look forward to continued efforts with KSI to educate people on ways to improve response to a sudden cardiac arrest and prevent deaths in youth sports.”
